Shake the Baron

>> Ghost Hits

Cozy 3

Shake the Baron is releasing “Ghost Hits,” a true rock album that is simultaneously bursting with jangly energy and shimmering, clean precision. Lyrically, it’s an honest and sometimes dark LP about lost love, false friendships, and the confusion of existence. But musically speaking, the songs are joyous, with ambitious guitar-driven arrangements and big stadium-rock drums. Guitars and vocals are provided by Jon Markson and Andrew Oedel, bass and additional vocals are by Max Currier, and Matt Addison holds it down on the drums.

Immersed in the ever-changing currents of Portland, Oregon’s music scene, John Craig & The Weekend’s newest release, Numbers, arrives as a breath of fresh air, something worlds apart from anything you’ve heard coming out of Portland…or anywhere for that matter. Though he’s careful not to call it a straight-up concept album, at it’s core, Numbers is an meandering pop odyssey with endless layers of beats, eclectic love songs, and mellow dance numbers to explore.

Derby

>> Madeline

Anyone who’s caught a live Derby show knows the raw and infectious emotion the boys are known to dish out. These unique qualities are exemplified in the band’s new release, Madeline. Joshua English

>> Lay Bare Your Bones

Joshua English is a modern day troubadour with roots in both Portland, Oregon and Boston, Massachusetts. Culling inspiration from Raymond Carver, perpetual motion, and oceans of black coffee, his new record, Lay Bare Your Bones, presents a unique brand of cynicism and leads a novel exploration of life’s ironies. With influences spanning Sam Cooke to Public Enemy, English’s forthcoming release reveals core threads of Brit-folk weaved over stylistic leanings akin to Chuck Ragan and Billy Bragg. Whether the understated and meandering beauty of “Nickel In” or the over-caffeinated, somebody-done-somebody- wrong sensibility of “River Rising Quickly,” this collection of songs is woven together tightly, in the classic tradition of a cohesive LP.

The Ascetic Junkies

>>This Cage Has No Bottom

Fresh off their wild and raucous 2008 release, One Shoe Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Portland, Oregon’s The Ascetic Junkies are back with a new LP, This Cage Has No Bottom. Maintaining an endearing blend of pop-infused bluegrass, the new record is a raw and rowdy hootenanny, showcasing the core of the Junkies magic: Matt Harmon and Kali Giaritta’s guy-girl harmonies, layered over whimsical melodies. On this sophomore release, listeners get a taste of the broad texture, lighthearted vibe, and reckless energy that turn the band’s live shows into keys and banjo-driven, romping stomping dance parties. With instrumentation reminiscent of early Decemberists’ recordings, The Ascetic Junkies’ melodic pop tendencies present something more akin to Miniature Tigers or The Rosebuds. Lyrical themes range from fact to fiction, while songs like “Get What You Want, Get What You Need” and “God/Devil/Gov’t” are standouts.

Jonah

>> The Wonder & The Thrill

jonah-2

Portland, Oregon’s Jonah has been a familiar name among the city’s ever changing music scene for almost ten years. The band’s latest full length, The Wonder and the Thrill, stands strong as their truest and most accessible recording to date, to be released nationally on November 9th, 2010. Like most artists, Jonah has evolved over the years. The Wonder and the Thrill reveals a departure from the bandʼs Brit-pop origins, unveiling a somewhat simpler and softer approach to their arrangements, instrumentation and overall recording.
Jonah originally formed as a garage band in the high desert country of Bend, Oregon among a group of teenagers who later migrated west together, landing in the City of Roses. They’ve grown up in Portland and have experienced the ebbs and flows of the burgeoning Northwest music scene, while enjoying a fair share of “thrills” along the way – releasing four records, touring nationally, landing songs in films and shows like Dawsonʼs Creek and Ghost Whisperer, sharing the stage with heavy-hitters like Silversun Pickups and Youth Group and playing sold out shows at many of their favorite west coast venues, like The Crystal Ballroom, The Doug Fir Lounge, and The Echo in L.A.

Pancake Breakfast

>> (self titled)

Pancake Breakfast is a nine-member roots machine from Portland, Oregon. Most of these songs were made-up on a little farm, far away from the big city. Mike Midlo wrote them. He tested each one by singing it to the dog and chickens before playing it for the band. That seemed to work out pretty well. The members of Pancake Breakfast like to have a good time. You can hear that on their debut full-length record. Sometimes they holler and make loud noises. You can hear that on the record, too! All the tracks were recorded by Mike Coykendall (She & Him, Blitzen Trapper, M. Ward) in a comfy house near a dormant volcano.

Lost Boy?

>> Fast, Burn (single) + Oh, My Creepy, feat. Boats (single)

Lost Boy? is the project of Brooklyn-based 26-year old, Davey Jones. For over five years, Jones has been regularly playing his infectious brand of lo-fi, punk-infused bedroom pop around the NYC-area while handing out free CD-R’s of his music at shows. With all the hard work, people have begun to take notice of his keep-it-fun and simple approach to catchy, garage punk. In 2010, Lost Boy has garnered coverage on Pitchfork, Altered Zones, Brooklyn Vegan, and Prefixmag.com. Looking to take his music beyond New York, Lost Boy? has released a free, digital-single of his fan-favorite “Fast, Burn” with “Oh My Creepy” as the B-side to hold people over while he records his new LP, slated for an early 2011 release.
