The Oregonian caught up with the Derby fellas for a little video session and a quick in-home performance of some of the songs off of Madeline EP. Derby shared the reasons behind recording live as a band, their thoughts on putting out an EP,  and the liberating process that entails. For anyone who wants a good picture of the type of jokes that Derby can dish out, then this is the interview for you.

As the grey of winter departs, and the spring shyly shows it’s sun-backed eyes, Portland begins to remember what it was like to to see sunbeams. In celebration of this yearly event, and for some friends’ residency and upcoming album, Jason Gears and JP Pederson talked with Portland, Oregon’s very own Sunbeam. They spoke of their upcoming album Sunbeam & the Lovely Ghost, Charlie Morris’ affinity towards sweaters, red beards, and Sunbeam’s upcoming residency at the White Eagle Cafe and Saloon. It’s been a long and arduous process, but Sunbeam & the Lovely Ghost is done and dusted. Brian Hall and the gang share with us their insight into the process, and the origins of Sunbeam the band.

A 6-piece baroque pop band from Portland, Oregon, Sunbeam channels influences as diverse as Cat Stevens, Nick Drake, and the Zombies. The typical sentiment in modern folk music might be one of melancholy and withdrawal, but Sunbeam aims to evoke, as well, the romanticism of David Bowie, and the childlike wonder of a Shirley Temple film; it’s rare to hear a band explore so many ideas and still remain truly cohesive. Sunbeam is both refreshing and distinct in Portland, for It is neither gimmick nor novelty—it’s a genuine attempt to move past the dredges of indifference and experience life to the fullest.

After Sunbeam’s successful “Best of the White Eagle” show, they signed on to pump out the jams every Monday of the month of February, 2011. If all goes according to plan, Sunbeam’s delicious new album, “Sunbeam & the Lovely Ghost” will hit the streets in late Spring. From us at Pet Marmoset, we say “it’s about time.” Each Monday, Sunbeam will be supported by some of their closest friends, such as the Parson Redheads, Norman, and Old Light. Make no mistake, this will be a lovely time.

Anyone who’s caught a live Derby show knows the raw and infectious emotion the boys are known to dish out. These unique qualities are exemplified in the band’s new release, Madeline. Breaking from tradition, the band is forgoing an LP and will be releasing a new group of songs on a limited edition 7″ paired with a digital EP. The 7” features the rocker “Don’t Believe In You” on Side A and the acoustic-pop melody, “One’s A Lonely One” on Side B.

In order to aptly celebrate the release of “Madeline,” Derby is bringing their release show to the Doug Fir, in Portland, Oregon, on FRIDAY, JANUARY 28th. Along with Dave’s sultry smile, the guys of Derby will be brandishing plenty of their new 7″, fresh-out-the-box, with that new vinyl smell. If you were wondering how January 28th could get any better, Ravishers and Curtains For You will be playing in support of their friends, Derby!

Once again, the dynamic duo of JP Pederson and Jason Gears combine to offer up a deep insight into a local band, and this time it’s our good friends Jonah. Henry Curl and co. take us through the process of recording their new release The Wonder and the Thrill while balancing families, and the journey as a band that is known as Jonah. Their latest full-length album The Wonder and the Thrill reveals a subtle departure from the bandʼs Brit-pop origins, unveiling a somewhat simpler and softer approach to their arrangements, instrumentation and overall recording.

Pet Marmoset is always happy to announce when one of ours gains some special attention. Last week, The Dimes’ song “Ballad of Winslow Homer,” off of their latest album “The King Can Drink The Harbor Dry,” was used as a soundtrack by the good people Stillmotion for a mini-film from a recent trip to the Atlanta Aquarium. Once released to the public, the video was a tremendous hit, tallying up over 40,000 views in the first day, and over 120,000 in a week.

The video is a gorgeous and serene two minute glimpse into the lives of the inhabitants of the aquarium. Take a couple minutes to have a look!
