Okay. Your record is done and it’s time to let people know about it.
Now what?
For starters, here’s a few basic tips to keep in mind and plan for:
- DO NOT set a release date before hiring a publicist. Setting a release date before consulting with your publicist only creates a potential for disaster. Everything should be carefully planned with a reason and a strategy behind it. Selecting the right release date is a crucial to achieving an effective and successful campaign.
- DO NOT set a release date before you have final physical copies of your release in hand. Or, if it’s a digital release, DO NOT set a release date until you have the finalized digital files ready to share with the public… and, as stated in #1, don’t set a release date until hiring a publicist!
- BUDGET. Publicity can sometimes be one of the most expensive components of a record release. As early in the process as possible, talk to a publicity agency (like us!) and establish a good, realistic budget that you can plan for. If your record is important to you, make sure you budget enough to give it a worthwhile publicity campaign.
- As a general rule, estimate four to six months for a publicity campaign. This means, once you have physical product in your hands, you still need at least four months to plan, work, and execute a successful national publicity campaign. The more time you can plan, the more opportunity for success you’ll have.
- Understand that no publicist can guarantee you a successful campaign. There are far too many factors for anyone to promise you a specific level of exposure. The record, the timing, the marketing, the band or artist’s history (or lack thereof), location, touring, and many other factors all combine to influence the ultimate success of a campaign – no matter how famous, successful, or talented your publicist is. This is not an excuse or a scape goat. This is reality.
