The game has changed. The music industry is an amoeba and there are many more questions than answers. Traditional approaches are giving way to new theories like “The Longtail” and new media applications like blogs and Twitter and “pay-what-you-want” pricing for records. Record labels, Top 40 music, and “hits” are becoming less relevant, while micro-niches are quickly becoming more valuable than mainstream appeal.
Somehow a scrappy rapper born in the bowels of New Orleans managed to sell more than a million records in one week in 2008… and a virtually unknown singer-songwriter from BFE Wisconsin quickly leapt from obscurity to stardom in only a few months… Both artists, Lil’ Wayne and Bon Iver, leveraged the power of social media, new DIY strategies, and guerrilla PR to spawn their success. Welcome to the new world of the independent artist.
Most importantly, “DIY” doesn’t mean you’re supposed to do it ALL yourself. Working with a with a variety of artists, media and industry types across the country, Pet Marmoset’s client roster is diverse sampling of many “movers and shakers” among the independent music community. The Pet Marmoset team are regarded as thought leaders in the world of online PR and guerrilla marketing and they enjoy helping artists with record releases, online strategies, PR campaigns, and other fun projects and initiatives. Pet Marmoset is the brain child of Ryan Wines, managed by he and his partner in crime Joseph Solis. Pet Marmoset is made up of Ryan, Joe, Jacob Magers, Veronica Medici, JP Pederson, and our wonderboy photographer genius – Mathias Ailstock. Oh, and from time to time, other friends and family join in to help out and have fun, as needed. Pet Marmoset alumni include Saxon Baird and Trent Finlay.
