Publicity

Publicity in the Digital AgeAs the landscape of the music industry continues to evolve and change, there is one thing that is still needed, as much as ever before: publicity.

Far too many exceptional records are never heard outside of the basements they were recorded in. If you don’t spend the time, money, and work to evangelize your music to the masses, few people will ever have the opportunity to discover it… to listen to it… to become obsessed with it.

Keep in mind that 99.999% of the world has never heard of you or your music. If you want people to hear your music, you have got to get the word out. Among an ever expanding list of wonderful communication methods and strategies (including social media, online marketing, direct-to-fan marketing, guerrilla tactics and others), publicity is still one of the most effective channels for getting the word out.

At Pet Marmoset, we approach publicity a little differently than most of the other PR shops and publicists around. While we appreciate the good ol’ print medium and we fully understand that it’s everyone’s dream to see your record reviewed in Rolling Stone and SPIN, we believe that conversations about music are taking place by word-of-mouth and in online dialog, more than anywhere else.

Seriously, when was the last time you discovered a new band or artist by reading Rolling Stone Magazine? While Rolling Stone is a dynamite publication and still maintains tremendous readership, popularity, and reputation… it certainly are not the be all, end all, like it once was. The truth is, for better or for worse, the publishing industry is just as upside down and as crazy as the music industry is these days. And while we can argue that it is a cause or a result – readers and consumers are going online in overwhelming numbers to get information over print publications.

It is due to our changing culture and these evolving consumer trends that we approach publicity with word-of-mouth and online media at the forefront of our strategies. We have relationships and contacts to more than 1000 online publications, zines, website, and blogs that we work with for coverage. While we certainly respect, believe in, and work closely with traditional and print media, we believe that each artist or band has a unique mix of publicity coverage, both online and print, that fits them best.
