Ume
Reporting from Houston, I recently attended the local 2-day Houston Free Press Summer Fest. One of the unexpected, stand-out performances of the festival was from a female-fronted Austin, Texas-based trio called Ume. The three-piece channels the aggressive, dissonant rock of Sonic Youth with moments of brooding, ethereal pop. The trio will playing with Meat Puppets at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon on October 22.
Here is “The Conductor” off their self-released EP, Sunshower.

New Song from The Castanets
Free-Folk rambler and part-time Portlander, David Raposa has recently released a new track off the up-coming album, Texas Rose, The Thaw, And The Beasts from his Castanets moniker. The new release will feature a plethora of guests from the San Diego music scene including Rocket From The Crypt, Black Heart Procession, Gogogo Airheart, and David J from Bauhaus who currently resides in Southern California’s beautiful border city.
The new song titled, “Worn from the Fight (With Fireworks)” features Raposa continuing to mix minimal traces of electronic elements with spacious gothic-folk. Texas Rose, The Thaw and The Beasts will be released via Asthmatic Kitty on September 22nd.
