“Suggested” will be a new weekly feature on the Pet Marmoset Blog – courtesy of our latest edition to the Pet Marmoset Team – Saxon Baird, who just arrived in Portland, via NYC, where he worked for Vogue Magazine, among other unique experiences and accolades along the way. Saxon plans to regularly provide readers with suggestions on interesting music, articles, podcasts, art or other findings that we thought would be worth sharing.

If you haven’t already heard, Northwest curmudgeon of Modest Mouse fame, Isaac Brock, has started his own label called “Glacial Pace”. So far, the roster includes his own band, college folk favorite Mason Jennings, Brooklynites Love as Laughter and Portland, Oregon’s very own Mimicking Birds.
While most of the bands have already gained somewhat a large following, Mimicking Birds is a different case. Information on the band is pretty limited and they don’t have any official releases. Nevertheless, the music is oh-so engaging and deserves to be put on your “Best New Music” radar. Beginning as the home recordings of a lad named Nick Lacy; the tunes are quiet, ethereal affairs that share the precious lo-fi feel of Iron and Wine with the dense, often eerie lyricism of Modest Mouse’s The Moon and Antarctica. Some of these songs sound as if they are being transmitted from space or from deep under water. They pull you into their heavy, melancholy mood wrapping you in like cotton, wool and a bottle of whiskey on an icy-Portland winter.
While no release date of a debut album has been set, the Glacial Pace site indicates that an album should be out sometime this summer. Also, they will be playing a show on April 18th at the Willamette Week’s Eat Mobile event at Disjecta on 8371 N. Interstate for only five bucks. Until then check out their Myspace, where you can check out some of their songs. You can check out my personal favorite track “The Loop” here:
