Iron and Wine To Release Two New Albums

It looks like Iron and Wine has started working on a brand new record – the follow-up to The Shepherd’s Dog, released in 2007. The new record, with the title still TBD, is scheduled to be out by the Spring of 2010. Team Marmoset have already started a countdown.

However, if you can’t wait that long for more of Sam Beam’s indie folk goodness, you might want to check out “Around the Well“, a colorful collection of songs that are either out of print or were never-before released…until now, that is.  The record spans Iron and Wine’s earliest sessions which yielded the band’s debut (2002’s The Creek Drank the Cradle) through material recorded for 2007’s The Shepherd’s Dog. The double-disc Around the Well collection is broken up into two sections. The first half is an assortment of hushed home recordings, unedited and raw, and the second highlights moments captured in the confines of proper studios with the help of other musicians, friends and engineers.

Around the Well is due to come out the 19th of May.

And finally, Around the Well will include the single, Such Great Heights – originally released on the Garden State soundtrack in 2004 and has long been thought to be a Postal Service cover…. However, I heard through the grapevine that Sam Beam actually gave that song to Ben Gibbard. Hmm…. In any event, this particular song has exhibited unusual staying power over the years. It has consistently been one of the weekly top 5 most frequently played tracks on social music site Last.fm since the website began, holding the top spot for nearly all of 2005. The song continued to stay, firmly set in the top 10 until March 2007, when the release of the Arcade Fire album, Neon Bible, knocked most songs down a few notches.
