STRATEGY: Blogs You Need To Read

longtail-blog

In the DIY world, often times the best resources and tools available are our very own community itself. At Team Marmoset, this couldn’t be more true. Some of the best ideas in the world aren’t published in books and aren’t given in speeches by highly paid executives or writers. Believe it or not, the internet – and more specifically -  the blog world, has much more innovative, relevant and urgently needed information than nearly any other single place in the world. And best of all, it’s instantly accessible, free and interactive.

At Team Marmoset, we’ve come to believe that time may be the single most valuable resource left on the planet. As such, we don’t expect you have time to surf the web for a couple hours every day, finding important and worthwhile blogs…taking notes…and then figuring out how to implement the knowledge into actionable and practical ways to help you succeed. Unfortunately, it’s just not that easy. Right?

Below is a short list of blogs that possess some of the smartest, most innovative thoughts on the planet. And while you will have to use your head to connect the dots between the words on these blogs and how the strategies, knowledge, and insight will specifically help you – you must keep your finger on the pulse of our contemporary genius if you want to succeed.

To make following these blogs easy, each of them has simple, customizable ways to subscribe to them. I recommend utilizing RSS feeds, as they are most convenient, non-intrusive and on-demand. However, email subscriptions work pretty good too. Let me know if any of this is new or confusing to you, or if you want more practical info and instructions on RSS feeds, blogs and the like. Send your questions to me at ryan@petmarmoset.net.

+ Music Think Tank – A place where DIY and indie music thought leaders, such as Derek Sivers and Dave Allen, weigh-in on a variety of topics.

+ The Long TailChris Anderson is the Editor-in-Chief of Wired Magazine and is THE thought leader on what may be the “secrets of the universe” regarding the future of the music industry and indie artists alike.

+ Seth’s Blog – Simply put, Seth Godin is the world’s greatest blogger. He is author of ten books that have been bestsellers around the world, and his eBook, “Unleashing the Ideavirus”, is the most popular ebook ever written.

+ PR 2.0 – Brian Solis is one of the foremost thought leaders in the world concerning the future of communications. He’s the Principal of FutureWorks, an award-winning PR and New Media agency in Silicon Valley and is co-founder of the Social Media Club. You’ll find that his philosophy, strategies and tactics are extremely versatile and are widely applicable for independent artists.

+ PampelmooseDave Allen is the bass player and founding member of Gang of Four and is widely considered to be one of the top thought leaders on the intersection of where the future of the music industry and technology meet. He runs an interactive ad agency in Portland, speaks on music industry topics all over the world and manages at least three blogs, including Social Cache and www.indieportlandmusic.com. And somehow, he also finds time to host the New Music Hour on Portland, Oregon’s Alternative 94.7 FM.

+ New Music Strategies – British professor of Music Industries, Andrew Dubber, explores topics and challenges of independent artists and has a helpful eBook that you can download for free.

+ Lefsetz LetterBob Lefsetz is an old music industry figure and longtime author of this email newsletter and blog. He worked previously as an entertainment business attorney and as a consultant to major record labels. Lefsetz created some internet buzz awhile back when he made public a heated email exchange with Kid Rock.

+ Scrappy Marketing – This blog is the recent brain child of my good friend and former colleague, Mario Schulzke. In short, the premise of this blog/project represents the core of Mario’s professional talent…which isn’t intended to be taken lightly. His philosophies, which I whole-heartedly subscribe to, are that present knowledge and technology have reached a point that it no longer takes millions…or even thousands of dollars to promote an idea/product/service/etc.

Happy reading…
