Twitter 101

A few months ago I was sitting in at the Stumptown Coffee Cafe on SW 3rd in Portland, enjoying a mocha with my friend and spoken word poet extraordinaire, Robert Bruce, when he started telling me about a cool new social media application called, Twitter. He pulled out his iPhone and explained how much fun he’s had “Twittering” and connecting with people. In a nutshell, he explained it as “speed blogging.” I nodded my head and pretended to understand what he was explaining. Now, about six months later, I’m addicted and try to send out “tweets” at least once or twice a day.

Twitter, where the question is always, “What are you doing right now?” (in 140 characters or less), truly is a revolutionary social networking application, right in the same ballpark with it’s predecessors, Myspace, Facebook, LinkedIn, blogs and others. Bands and musicians MUST utilize Twitter to it’s full capabilities (ie: mobile apps, website integration, Facebook plugins, etc) if you want to connect with your fans. Twitter isn’t merely “just another weird internet thingy”.  Twitter is essential.

If you still aren’t sure what Twitter is all about or if you’re feeling a little out of the loop, here are couple good resources to educate yourself with…

My friend and SEO Guru, Ben Lloyd of Amplify-Interactive, just posted a wonderful insights and tips page about Twitter on his website, titled “Twitter Essentials”. It contains everything you need to know about utilizing the full capabilities of Twitter and I highly recommend reading it. Also, if you want a quick little intro to Twitter, www.twitter.com has a nice video that explains how it works. Here it is:

Your friend Scott of Penny Jam linked me to your site. Great stuff, thanks so much. We’re a Vancouver indie band looking to play Portland with some like minded people. Any suggestions?

    Cheers,
    Larry
