It's…it's…Live Wire!

This Friday night, Portland’s own, The Dimes, will be unveiling two brand spanking new songs – live on one of the best live radio shows in the country…and Team Marmoset will be there.

Live Wire! is a radio variety show recorded in front of a theater audience at the Aladdin Theater and broadcast on Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB). The show includes original sketch comedy, illuminating interviews and local and national musical guests. The folks at Live Wire! describe it as Monty Python meets Charlie Rose…if Charlie Rose had a Klezmer band.

This Friday night Live Wire! is at Portland’s Aladdin Theater - All ages – Doors at 7pm, show at 8pm featuring:

  • Berkeley Breathed, the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist who created Bloom County, Outland, and Opus, will bring his unique point of view to Live Wire! on October 17. A staunch supporter of animal rights, Breathed is currently working on a children’s book called “Pete ‘n Pickles.”
  • Congressman Earl Blumenauer, our representative has been a busy man lately. He will drop in to give us a peak into how he’s been spending his days in these interesting times.
  • Filmusik: The Superman Orchestra is an artist collective project working in support of live music and performance. The orchestra consists of 14 musicians who provide live accompaniment to the great Super Man cartoons of the 1940s, with the orchestra and voice actors visible to the audience throughout the performance. The scores are the work of contemporary composers and have been written specifically for the cartoons. How the Live Wire! crew is going to work this out on radio will be something to see.
  • Nau is back! The designer and retailer of outdoor clothing made from sustainable materials with an emphasis on fair labor and responsible environmental practices closed their doors in February due to finance issues, only to be acquired by Horny Toad a few weeks later. Nau will be re-opening for business in mid-October. Mark Galbraith, co-founder and VP of Product Design, and Peter Kallen, Men’s Products Design Director, will discuss the ups and downs of retail, their design philosophy, and their mission to do well while doing good. They may also comment on the sartorial choices of Faces For Radio Theater.
  • Storm Large and Holcombe Waller will perform their songs from “(D)early Departed,” a compilation CD featuring songs by Portland musicians about residents of the Lone Fir Cemetery who met untimely or unusual deaths. The proceeds of the CD go to the Friends of Lone Fir to support the renovation and upkeep of the cemetery. Storm sings about Charity Lamb, who killed her abusive husband with an axe and Holcombe pays tribute to eternal friendship.
  • The Dimes boys have been working hard these days. They’ve performed more than 20 college shows this year and have played almost 100 total shows in 2008! And as if that hasn’t been enough, they’ve somehow found time to work up more than 20 new songs – some of which will end up on a new full length record this Spring. But you don’t have to wait until the Spring. The guys are putting out a cute little EP with four new songs on it this Winter. It’s sort of a “tide me over” for fans and friends. They’ll be playing two of their new songs on Live Wire.
  • In addition to these fabulous guests look for original sketch comedy from Faces For Radio Theater, music from Ralph Huntley and the Mutton Chops, and sparkling wit from host Courtenay Hameister.
